Nearsightedness is medically referred to as myopia. This condition occurs when the eye's shape causes light rays to focus in front of the retina, rather than directly on it. As a result, distant objects may appear blurry while close objects can be seen clearly. Myopia is a common refractive error and can be corrected using glasses, contact lenses, or surgical procedures like LASIK.

In contrast, hyperopia, also known as farsightedness, occurs when the eye is too short or the cornea is too flat, making it difficult to see nearby objects clearly. Astigmatism is another refractive issue caused by an irregularly shaped cornea or lens, resulting in distorted or blurred vision at all distances. Microtia, on the other hand, is a congenital deformity of the outer ear and is unrelated to vision problems. Thus, myopia specifically describes the condition of nearsightedness.
